Context
According to the WHO, about 285 million people are blind or visually impaired. 80% of these cases are preventable. However, according to the National Eye Survey (NESII), in 2014 the two major causes of blindness in South Malaysia were cataract and glaucoma, both preventable diseases.
Supported project
In 2019, L'OCCITANE Malaysia and the Foundation supported the Malaysian Red Crescent Society for a project to combat preventable blindness in the ophthalmology department of the Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru Hospital, based in Johor.
It aimed to finance the purchase of two slit lamps to screen the eyesight of the hospital's patients and carry out acuity measurements. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness among patients about eye pathologies.
