Context

Why plant chestnut trees?
The chestnut has a very long lifespan, more than 100 years. It is suitable for the altitude (around 900m) and the type of soil on the Albion plateau. Planting it in agroforestry not only supports local agricultural production and fertilizes the soil, but also combats global warming and maintains biodiversity and water.

Supported project

Since 2019, the L’OCCITANE Foundation has supported Act for Planet in its fight against global warming through agroforestry plantation projects. After the first successful plantations of chestnut trees on the Contadour plateau during the first year, the association plans to continue its plantations on the Albion Plateau in partnership with local farmers in order to support local agricultural production.

Modern agroforestry techniques use real ancestral know-how geared towards productivity and ecology, thereby fertilizing the soil, preserving water quality and producing biodiversity.

Some figures

In 2020-2021, 600 new chestnut trees of 10 different varieties will be planted, almost half of which will be funded by the Foundation.

2020 Budget 5 000 euros

Goal 10 preserved varieties

History

Project supported since 2019

Since 2019, the L’OCCITANE Foundation has supported Act for Planet in its fight against global warming through agroforestry plantation projects. The overall objective of this project is to work following an ancestral know-how consisting in planting trees near crops in the open ground (cereals, vegetables, aromatic herbs, fodder). It is an agile system that is both ecological and productive.

This technique allows not only the realization of a tree planting project but also in the long term the fight against the effects of climate deregulation and soil erosion.

Total budget 10 000 euros

Total goal 14 preserved varieties
