Context

The Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur Region has many farms which possess remarkable natural and agricultural heritage. However, finding new owners for farms is a major challenge in agriculture, especially in this region where a quarter of all farms have disappeared in just 10 years. When farm owners retire, it is difficult to pass on the farm to individuals who wish to preserve the agricultural vocation and the unity of the farmland.  Unless a solution can be found, it will be impossible to preserve the agro-ecological heritage of these farms in the long term.

Supported project

The L'OCCITANE Foundation supports the project run by the Terre de Liens association. The objective is to preserve the agro-ecological heritage of the Gavottes farm, located at Plan d'Orgon in the PACA region. The programme is split into two phases:

- An environmental assessment of the 16 hectares of the farm to monitor any changes to its biodiversity and provide recommendations for agricultural practices which can preserve or improve the quality of the environment
- This is followed by the development of agro-ecological infrastructures to increase biodiversity through the creation of new refuge areas for wildlife and the promotion of species diversity

Some figures

The aim of the project is to preserve the agro-ecological heritage of the Gavottes farm in the long term. 24 people were able to participate in the environmental assessment and diagnosis, which was carried out in partnership with expert ethnobotanists on-site in order to adapt sustainable agricultural practices and develop agro-ecological infrastructures such as tree and shrub hedges.
