Context

In 2011, the tsunami destroyed most of the northeastern coast of Japan, then protected at that time by world’s largest concrete breakwaters and windbreaking non-native pine forests planted there hundreds of years ago.

Supported Project

L’OCCITANE Japan and the L’OCCITANE Foundation are supporting a reforestation project that aims to restore the areas devasted by the 2011 tsunami. This planting programme helps to recreate a barrier of forest. It will protect resident and coastal ecosystems from natural disasters.

It draws on Japanese cultural traditions around the harmony between people and nature.
