Context
Pine forests are part of the “climax” ecosystems that allow vegetation and wildlife to proliferate in North America. These are composed with more than 600 plant and animal species, 29 of which are classified as endangered at the federal level.
In the United States, the Californian forests have been severely impacted by the fires of last years; the recent fires of 2020 touched more than 3 million hectares of forest.
At the same time, the state of Florida have more than 37 forests, representing more than a billion hectares of vegetation which are impacted by fires, epidemics of fungi that attack pines and many bad weather such as storms or hurricanes.
Supported Project
L’OCCITANE USA and the L’OCCITANE Foundation are supporting this reforestation project which will contribute to the achievement of the United Nations development objectives. It contributes to soil and water quality, helps fight climate change and protects wildlife in California and Florida such as the California spotted owl.
This project also acts on the restoration of the habitats of local terrestrial and aquatic fauna as part of the tree planting taking place along rivers in areas where trees have been cut or died of disease. Those plantations are essential to provide clean water, improve water quality and reduce bank erosion. Thus, fish and other forms of river life will find their own natural habitat.
Volunteers are involved in most of the plantations to educate the public on the importance of preserving biodiversity and the importance of a clean watershed.
