Context
In 2015, Burkina Faso ranked 185th out of 188 on the HDI, and 44% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. More than 1,400,000 people (8.8% of the population) are visually impaired, of whom more than 230,000 are reportedly blind. The Bobo-Dioulasso region has many areas with little or no development, often neglected outlying neighbourhoods with poor water supply and often poorly integrated into public services, where fragile populations are concentrated.
Supported Project
In 2017 - 2018, the L'OCCITANE Foundation and the international headquarters of L'OCCITANE supported the Ordre of Malte as part of its project to ensure ophthalmological screening among the populations of Bobo-Dioulasso and surrounding villages.
The project was structured around the following three components:
1) The screening and referencing of patients and pathologies through communication campaigns, two essential actions to promote access to optical corrections and surgical operations.
2) Operations and post-operative follow-ups.
3) Improving vision through screening to provide quality glasses, adapted to needs and at a low cost.
