Context

In 2015, Burkina Faso ranked 185th out of 188 on the HDI, and 44% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. More than 1,400,000 people (8.8% of the population) are visually impaired, of whom more than 230,000 are reportedly blind. The Bobo-Dioulasso region has many areas with little or no development, often neglected outlying neighbourhoods with poor water supply and often poorly integrated into public services, where fragile populations are concentrated.

Supported project

In 2018-2019, the L'OCCITANE Foundation and the international headquarters of L'OCCITANE supported the project of Ordre of Malte, which aimed at ensuring the screening and treatment of visual impairments among populations in remote areas and in the surroundings of Bobo-Dioulasso. It included screening for deficiencies, sales of glasses or cataract operations through comprehensive, quality medical care at a social price.
