Context

It is estimated that almost 6 million people in Africa are blind and while around 20 million have low vision. In many cases, a cost-effective treatment is possible. However, for women, rural communities, marginalised groups and people with disabilities, often have limited access to this healthcare solution, especially in Mozambique. Despite recent progress, the health system remains fragile and nearly half of the population lives in poverty.

Supported Project

In 2025-2026, L’Occitane en Provence UK supports a Sightsavers project focused on developing a team of qualified eye health professionals at Nampula Central Hospital. Initially, in 2007, the centre had just one ophthalmologist, 5 ophthalmic technicians and only 2 health facilities to provided eye health services to a population of approximately 4 million people. Now, Nampula province has 4 ophthalmologists, 47 ophthalmic technicians, 7 optometrists and 19 out of 23 districts have dedicated eye health services. Although considerable progress has been made in reducing avoidable blindness, a significant backlog of cataract surgeries remains, and much work is needed to address the barriers preventing women and girls from accessing eye health services.
