This project is part of a three-year initiative being run by the NGO CBM UK that aims to set up a training centre and teach surgeons across sub-Saharan Africa. The L'OCCITANE Foundation and L'OCCITANE South Africa have committed to supporting eight surgeons through training for two years. Simulators are used for medical and surgical teaching, meaning skills can be acquired quickly and safely. Eight ophthalmology registrars in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe are being trained with this simulator in modern cataract and glaucoma surgery techniques. Once trained, these ophthalmology registrars will be able to teach the techniques to others in their own university hospitals.
