Context

The Public Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, a tertiary institution in Pahang, serves as the referral center for ophthalmology services in the region. The Department provides both general and specialized services, covering areas such as glaucoma, medical retina, oculoplasty, cornea, vitreoretina, and pediatric ophthalmology. However, in a context where the diabetic patient population is growing, having a higher risk of developing diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels, waiting times for surgery interventions are getting longer. Diabetic retinopathy stands out as one the main cause of blindness worldwidewith an increasing number of young patients requiring advanced surgical intervention.

In 2023-2024, L'OCCITANE Malaysia supports the Vision Tech Pahang 2024 project, titled "Enhancing Tools and Tech For Clearer Vision," led by the The Public Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, The Department will acquire :

  • Consumable items essential for vitreoretinal surgery, providing significant benefits to individuals with retinal diseases such as advanced diabetic eye disease and retinal detachment. This surgery requires specialized consumables for the vitrectomy machine. Patients undergoing this surgery will be able to improve their navigation vision, contributing to an enhanced quality of life.
  • Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy (BIO) is a crucial equipment employed for eye examinations, particularly focusing on the retina. It plays a pivotal role in screening and diagnosing ocular diseases, especially in infants, young children, and patients who may have mobility constraints. Integrating binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy into community eye screenings, especially in rural and suburban areas, ophthalmologists can enhance their local expertise, thereby improving the effectiveness of eye care management.

The acquisition of these instruments and consumables will benefit the residents of Pahang, especially in the eastern part of Pahang - Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin.
